Why Are My Hair Extensions Turning Peachy / Pink!?
Why Are My Hair Extensions Turning Peachy / Pink!?
Looking in the mirror and seeing that your beautiful professional hair extensions have turned a peachy, pink colour can be a shock to the system! Some of you may have experienced this yourself or if you're a fan of Love Island, noticed some of the blondes in the villa slowly showing tones of pink / orange in their hair extensions.
Let's get to the bottom of why this happens & how to avoid it happening this summer!
The factors that contribute to hair extensions going pink / orange
Sun Cream
Let’s keep it simple and top line the science, when sun cream is absorbed into hair extensions and exposed to UV light, the chemical reactions start. Avobenzone and Octocrylene are the culprits within sun creams known to cause this chemical reaction therefore causing the hair colour to change over time.
Hard Water
Hard water has a higher level of minerals in which causes our hair colour to fade and professional hair extensions can turn pink / orange, just like our marketing manager Faye's hair extensions (picture below) after washing her hair back home in Norfolk, which is within one of the blue areas on the map below.
This doesn’t happen to your natural hair because our scalp produces the necessary oils to counterbalance these minerals. However like we said, professional hair extensions are not attached to the scalp, so they don't benefit from all the natural oils needed to protect your hair extensions from the minerals.
Washing your hair extensions repeatedly using this type of water will cause a mineral build up leading to pink / peachy / warm hair whilst also making the hair extensions dry and can lead to damage.
Most of our favourite holiday destinations have hard water and the chemical reaction process is sped up by sun exposure. There are many places in the UK which have hard water, see the graph below to make note if you are living or visiting one of these areas.

Sea Water & Chlorine = Damaged Hair Extensions
Sea water and chlorine can strip the colour from professional hair extensions. Salt water dehydrates and strips the hairs pigmentation making them change colour & whilst chlorine keeps water super clean, it will also damage your hair extensions, stripping the colour and leaving your hair feeling dry which will lead to breakage as well as colour discolouration.
Perfumes
Believe it or not, some perfumes have ingredients in that your professional hair extensions also won't love! If sprayed close to or directly on to the hair it can also turn your hair pinky / orange so be sure to sweep your longer locks out of the way when you’re spraying your perfumes.
"I'm panicking! How can I get the pink / peach out of my hair!?"
Is the damage already done before reading this blog? Not to fear, all you need is to purchase the Malibu C hard water sachets & follow the at-home instructions to bring your blonde locks back to life.
Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Remedy Sachets – Spectrum One Hair
PLEASE NOTE: You'll need one sachet per 50grams of hair extensions so make sure to check (ask your hair stylist if needed) how many packs of hair you have in to order the correct amount needed.
How can I prevent this from happening to my hair extensions?
- Buy sun cream's that don't contain Avobenzone and Octocrylene.
- Use Malibu C hard water shampoo and conditioner whilst you're on holiday or in an area of hard water.
- Keep your daily perfume away from your professional hair extensions.
- Check if you live in a hard water area or are travelling to one (UK or abroad!) – you may need to buy the Malibu C set for at home use or whilst you're away.
- Avoid getting your hair extensions wet whilst swimming in the sea or swimming pools
