Hair Extensions Prices: 5 Key Factors You Must Consider

by Emily-Jo Sutcliffe
When the time comes to buy a fresh set of hair extensions, the price will no doubt play a major part in your decision-making process. Don’t worry - that’s common with plenty of shoppers. You’re about to invest your hard-earned cash into a product, so let us help you to make sure that you get what you should for your money. So, what factors should you look out for when purchasing your extensions? From the weight and the length of the hair to the durability and style of the extensions, multiple areas need to be taken into consideration when buying your fresh set. Don’t worry if you’re not sure, we will guide you through what you need to know! We’ll cover:
  • The Weight and Length of the Hair
  • The Quality of the Hair
  • Durability and Style
  • What Brand are the Extensions?
  • Geographical Location and Differing Salon Prices

The Weight and Length of the Hair

Depending on how thick and voluptuous you want your hairstyle to look, the price will vary dramatically. For a thicker and fuller looking style, you’re going to need more hair. Likewise, if you have long hair anyway, you’re going to need long hair for it to blend in and look natural. With that in mind, the longer, thicker and fuller the extensions are, the more money they’re going to cost you. If you don’t buy the correct product that matches your actual hairstyle, you run the risk of not achieving the look you desire. Plus, wasting your money as you’re not happy with your purchase. Choosing the right length and weight of your hair extensions is crucial to executing the look you’ve always wanted - we understand that choosing the right product can be daunting, which is why at Spectrum One, our expert team is always here to help. When deciding on the right product for you, you should always consider the weight of your extensions. They’re measured in grams and usually range from 27g (short length I-Tip Pack) to 200g (24” Weave) depending on the method and length. While a full head of thick extensions is a desirable, mermaid-style appearance, is it really necessary? And does it fit within your budget?

The Quality of the Hair

When you’re investing in a new set of hair extensions, you want to be sure that you’re getting the best quality hair possible. So, how can you be sure that you’re making a worthwhile purchase and aren’t getting ripped off? Firstly, you should always check where the hair originates from and how they are processed- this can have a major effect on quality levels. Hair extensions suppliers source their hair from around the world - the different countries produce hair differently and it can have a major impact on the longevity of extensions. Hair is sourced from China, Russia, India and Japan - at Spectrum One, all our products are sourced from rural China, the forefront of quality in the hair extensions market. Along with Russian hair, it’s stronger and thicker than any other product. Another indicator of quality is that the hair is raw virgin. This means that all products are undamaged and not previously dyed - that way, the hair will last a lot longer and you’ll ultimately get more wear out of your new set. Also, look out for and avoid “fallen hair” - you should always look for “cut from the head” products for a healthy set.

Durability and Style

How long do hair extensions last? While there’s no definitive answer to this question and it depends upon your aftercare routine, there are always guidelines of how long certain hair extensions styles should last. There are various styles on the market for you to choose from, that way, you can get the product that’s suited to your style the most. Obviously, the more durable that your hair extensions are, the longer that they’ll last and the more you’ll get for your money. The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a new product that you think is perfect, for them to only need replacing a couple of weeks down the line. That’ll mean you’ve wasted time and money and will be back to square one. So, how long can the different styles be predicted to last for? Obviously, these are a broad guideline, the way you look after them will determine the condition that they’re in and how long they last for, of course.
  • Clip-in extensions. Good quality human hair clip-ins can be expected to last between 3-6 months if worn every day and looked after correctly. Weft hair extensions. Regular salon visits are necessary with wefts. We recommend that you visit every 6 weeks for tightening and 12 weeks for a refit. Weft hair extensions should last 9 months with the correct aftercare, if not longer!
  • Tape-in hair extensions. Tapes need refitting and retaping every 6-8 weeks - however, it’ll need to be more often for thinner hair so that it doesn’t get damaged easily. Again, Spectrum One hair tapes can last 9 months or longer with the correct aftercare.
  • I-Tip hair extensions. For gorgeous results, I-Tips need to be rotated every 12 weeks. Durability isn’t a problem with these extensions and they will confidently last over 9 months with the correct aftercare and maintenance.

What Brand are the Extensions?

Of course, there are plenty of brands on the market, all vying for your custom. However, that’s all a lot of brands are out there to do, once they’ve lined their pockets with a sale, they don’t care about your results. Selling cheap hair for a premium price is a big no-no in our book! It’s unethical and brands will only be found out in the long run and looked at unfavourably. Not only do a lot of brands differ in quality but their prices too. Just because a brand charges a premium price for a product, doesn’t mean that their product will always reflect that quality. With that in mind, look out for overly cheap products too - if something seems too good to be true, the likelihood is that it probably is. A fresh set of hair extensions aren’t just any old purchase - they’re an investment. Which is why you need to be sure that you’re investing in a product from a business that you can wholeheartedly trust and is well received by the industry. If you’re a little unsure of the business, look out for credibility pieces such as testimonials and past case studies - that’ll help you position the brand and work out whether they’re right for you or not.

Geographical Location and Differing Salon Prices

As with anything, hair extensions tend to be more expensive in larger cities. Plus, you’ll find that they’re a lot more expensive in high-end salons too. The reason for this is because they tend to operate at a more premium hourly rate, which you need to take into consideration when getting your hair extensions fitted. When looking for your extensions, make sure that you shop around. It’d be foolish to go straight with the first salon that you look into. After all, what if you could get a better deal elsewhere? At Spectrum One, our customers are always at the forefront of our minds, therefore, you can be sure that you’re in the most capable hands and will definitely be getting unrivalled value for your money.
